Efficient Optimization in Mine Planning:
Sharing the Chilean and South African Experiences

6 July 2012
New Mine Design Llab, Chamber of Mines Building, The University of the Witwatersrand

The School of Computational and Applied Mathematics at Wits University is hosting a collaborative visit by Prof. Jorge Amaya from the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) at the Universidad dé Chile in July 2012. They had proposed a 1-day joint workshop with the Mine Planning, Optimization and Valuation (MPOV) research group in the Wits School of Mining, where Prof. Amaya can share the CMM Chilean experiences in modeling and solving strategic mining problems using High Performance Computing (HPC). The MPOV research group also liaises with Cyest Corporation in South Africa and has been considering a 1- day workshop on efficient evaluation of options or technical alternatives in mine planning. These common interests resulted in a discussion with the SAIMM Secretariat to have a joint SAIMM/MPOV/CMM/Cyest 1-day workshop on the 6th July 2012.New Mine Design Lab, Chamber of Mines Building, The University of the Witwatersrand

Objectives
• To find robust optimal sequences for the extraction for open pit deposits within the constraint of prohibitive computer execution time.
• To introduce the mathematical formulation of the strategic mineplanning problem and present corresponding algorithms that can be solved by using High Performance Computing (HPC).
• To demonstrate how a rules-based scheduling and economic modeling approach can reduce the completion time and quality of a full option study for a new mine.
• To introduce the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) which is a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) technique in solving complex multi-dimensional mine planning decision-making problems.

About The Presenters

Jorge Amaya,
Professor and associate researcher at the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of the Universidad de Chile, has a Mathematical Engineering diploma from the Universidad de Chile, Master in Applied Sciences from the Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium), Master in Mathematical Statistics from CENES-OEA, and PhD in Applied Sciences from the Université Catholique de Louvain. At CMM, he leads LPLab (Logistics and Production Laboratory); an academic group devoted to the optimization modeling for the Chilean industry. His fields of specialty are Optimization and Mathematical Programming. He has written numerous scientific articles in theory and practice of Mathematical Optimization and Modeling. He has also carried out numerous research projects and consulting in the field of Mathematical Modeling and industrial applications of Mathematics.

Nelson Morales,
I is a mathematical engineer with a PhD in sciences, and since 2003, has worked in modeling of mine planning problems as well as the design and implementation of algorithms for their resolution. Nelson has participated into several projects, consulting
and software development for different mine companies and currently the head of the mine planning group and the Delphos mine planning laboratory at the Advanced Mining Technology Center of the University of Chile.
