The Ferrous and Base Metals Development Network (FMDN) of the DST's Advanced Metals Initiative (AMI) programme will host the AMI's annual conference in 2012.

The conference seeks to provide insight into the state of R&D under the following broad themes:

Lightweight and/or Durable Steels for cost effective Transportation and Infrastructure,

Post Ferrous '12 Conference - Metallorgraphy Workshop

*Progress Assessment of R&D Programmes in the AMI-FMDN
*Insight into potential and value-adding R&D within the AMI-FMDN

Who should attend

Stakeholders from the energy, petrochemical and transportation industries where ferrous metals (i.e. iron, steel, stainless steels, superalloys, etc.) are used in their infrastructure. Also included in this invitation are Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), Government Departments and Science Councils that are involved and/or have interest in R&D in these areas.

The conference will provide a forum for researchers and industry role players to present the progress made on research and development, as well as industrial application of technologies. The intention is also to promote the activities of the Ferrous & Base Metals Development Network to the broader South African industrial and scientific communities. It is a unique opportunity for networking and information sharing.

Papers are invited on the following topics which are expected to be dealt with during the conference proceedings:

*Overview of the National Transport Masterplan (NATMAP - 2050)
*Overview of the Railway Development Plan in South Africa
*Materials for Cost Effective Transportation
     - Lightweight Materials for Rail Applications
     - Lightweight Materials for Land-based Transportation (e.g. vehicles, trucks, etc.)
*Material challenges in the Petrochemical Industry
*Materials for Petrochemical Applications
*Materials for Energy Generation Applications.
