Collaborating effectively to address GBV in the workplace

BACKGROUND

According to substantial research on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) by World Vision and the Department of Statistics South Africa, GBV is a serious issue affecting people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds. Mining companies play a crucial role in addressing GBV by fostering inclusive and respectful workplaces. Our mission is to support these companies in creating safe and more equal environment by raising awareness and encouraging actionable change against GBV. By uniting diverse voices and strategies, we could build a mining environment where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.

Vanessa Doble will provide insights into Anglo American’s comprehensive approach to addressing GBV within the mining industry. She will discuss practical aspects of their “Living with Dignity Hub” program, which aims to create safer, more supportive environments for all employees. The Living with Dignity Hub is a division within Anglo American South Africa dedicated to enforcing a zero-tolerance policy against sexual harassment, bullying, victimization, domestic violence, and gender-based violence. It prioritizes a survivor-centred approach to handling complaints, ensuring sensitive, swift, confidential, and fair procedures.

Speaker

Vanessa Doble is an admitted attorney with over 24 years professional experience who has done consulting work for various entities including the World Bank and Open Society Foundation. Vanessa was appointed Head of Anglo American’s Living with Dignity Hub in 2022, after her former position as Head of Legal and Compliance at the South African Rugby Union.

Vanessa is a member of the World Rugby Council and World Rugby Women’s Player Welfare Committee and a recipient of the Women’s Executive Leadership Scholarship. Her experience in strategic planning, project management, impact assessment and research has enabled her to lead complex projects – working with multi-disciplinary teams in challenging environments.

She spearheaded a ‘Women in Sports Leadership’ initiative which is currently being implemented within SA Rugby, while leading a team implementing a safeguarding programme throughout the organisation. Vanessa holds a Masters in Social Innovation from the University of Cambridge Judge Business School, having earlier attained a BA, LLB and LLM from the University of Cape Town.
