Climate change is reshaping rainfall patterns, runoff behaviour, and water-related risks across mining operations, making it increasingly important to incorporate future climate conditions into mine water planning

BACKGROUND

This webinar will explore how climate model outputs can be translated into practical inputs for mine water balance modelling and surface water management. It will cover approaches for assessing uncertainty and converting projected changes in rainfall and broader climate drivers into future rainfall records that remain statistically consistent with observed data while accounting for likely future shifts and climate variability. These adjusted datasets can then be used to rerun mine water models and support more informed decision-making on water supply, storage capacity, discharge and treatment requirements, tailings management, mine planning, closure strategies, and long-term risk management.

Carla is a geologist and environmental management specialist with wide-ranging experience across mining, exploration, consulting, and sustainability programmes in Africa. She began her career as one of the first female underground mining geologists at JCI’s South Deep Shaft and later worked as a Senior Exploration Geochemist on projects across multiple countries. She went on to specialise in EIA and mine closure work, held environmental leadership roles including Environmental Manager at South Deep, and completed a Master’s in Sustainable Development (Environmental Management and Climate Change) at SOAS, University of London. She has since led initiatives in mine water management, sustainable mine closure and the just energy transition, and is currently CEO of MineCare Evolution, focused on economic diversification for mining communities.

Peter Shepherd

Peter Shepherd is a hydrologist with three decades of experience in hydrology and water resource management. He is registered as a Professional Natural Scientist and Partner and Principal Scientist at SRK Consulting, where he has worked since 1992.

His work includes flood estimation and routing through dams, dam break analysis and modelling for dam safety inspections andproposed dams, long-term water yield analysis for water supply dams, flood attenuation studies, reservoir yield analysis, and flow estimation for water and salt balances. Peter has deep experience supporting mining projects across Africa, particularly in water supply and stormwater management.
