Background

Hydrometallurgy for the Future

The world’s dependency on metals has become more evident with the growing demand for metals required to drive advancements in the technological and digital landscape and, the energy transition for a carbon neutral future. This growing demand however, implies that the metal extraction industry will need to play a significant role in providing the world with vast quantities of metals crucial in the building of the necessary infrastructure.

Furthermore, energy and water are two critical inputs in the hydrometallurgical process flowsheets and their increasing shortage suggests the need for the development of processes that take such challenges into consideration. A circular hydrometallurgy approach focusing on innovative research and developments around energy and resource efficient processes based on closing materials and resources loops can therefore, play an important role if the metal extraction sector is to meet the current and future global metal demands. In addition, advancements in the field of artificial intelligence can also allow for the use of innovative tools such as machine learning to better understand, predict and optimise hydrometallurgical processes in a smarter and sustainable manner.

The SAIMM Hydrometallurgy conference, 2024, will bring together internationally and locally recognized scientists and engineers from mining and metal producing companies, project design and implementation entities, equipment and reagent suppliers, research and academic institutions to discuss and share innovative technologies that can assist the global world in meeting the current and future metal demands.

 

CONFERENCE TOPICS

All papers on general topics in hydrometallurgy are welcome but we particularly encourage contributions in the areas of

Keynote speakers

Professor, Kerstin Maria Forsberg,
KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Kerstin Forsberg has 20 years of experience in research and education in separation processes, with a focus on crystallization and precipitation. She applies this knowledge in projects concerning hydrometallurgical recovery of resources from primary and secondary sources, e.g., spent batteries, magnet waste, pickling acid, red mud and apatite. Forsberg is head of the division for resource recovery at KTH. She is also the current chair of the Hydrometallurgy and Electrometallurgy Committee at The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). She is the lead organizer for the Rare Metal Extraction and Processing symposium at TMS to be given in Orlando 2024. Forsberg regularly contributes to international conferences as member of scientific committees. She is a passionate advocate for collaboration for sustainable development.

Lilian Velásquez-Yévenes,
Associate Professor, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile

Ph.D. in Mineral Science from Murdoch University, Australia, and a Metallurgical Civil Engineer from the University of Concepción. Currently Associate Professor at the Department of Mining Engineering at Universidad Católica de Chile. In 2015, she was recognized with the "Research or Relevant Artistic Creation Award" from the Universidad Católica del Norte, a distinction achieved for the first time in the Faculty of Engineering and Geological Sciences. Winner of the 2021 "100 Inspiring Women in Mining" award presented by WIMM Chile. Her research domain area around Hydrometallurgy for the sustainable production of metals. Her research includes the development of hydrometallurgical processes for the extraction of refractory minerals such as black oxides and sulfide minerals in chloride media, as well as the reprocessing of mining waste or passive sites like tailings and dump. Furthermore, she is investigating urban mining, including the extraction of valuable metals from e-waste. Her investigations are oriented toward the sustainable utilization of seawater, microorganisms, discarded salts, and organic chemical agents.

Prof. Dr. Koen Binnemans,
Professor of metallurgical chemistry, KU Leuven (Belgium)   

Professor Koen Binnemans is an inorganic chemist who is combining fundamental and applied research in a unique, double-sided interaction model. His main field of expertise could be defined as metallurgical chemistry, working at the border between chemistry and extractive metallurgy. He is the head of the SOLVOMET Group, KU Leuven (Belgium). He has made ground-breaking contributions to the fields of solvometallurgy, solvent extraction of metals with ionic liquids and recycling of rare earths. He has more than 30 years of experience working with rare earths and is internationally recognised as a world-leading specialist in this field. Recently he introduced the concept of circular hydrometallurgy and its 12 principles. He is the recipient of two prestigious ERC Advanced Grants of the European Research Council, the first one on solvometallurgy and the second one on circular hydrometallurgy. According to Google Scholar, his research work has been cited 50500 times (h-index = 107).

Student Poster Competition

STUDENT POSTER COMPETITION
The conference will include a student poster session where students will be given an opportunity to prepare a poster and a 5-minute presentation on their research projects. Students are requested to indicate during the submission that their abstract is for the student poster session. The best student poster will be offered an award.

At the tip of the Cape Peninsula – only 65 km from the city of Cape Town – lies a wild and untamed wilderness.

The perfect city escape for any nature lover, Cape Point is a Natural World Heritage Site – rich in fauna and flora – where wild antelope, baboon, Cape Mountain Zebra, and 250 species of bird roam free in this 7750-hectare nature reserve.

Heading out of the city, we journey south along the coast, past the pristine beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay. To the left, we see the majestic peaks of the Twelve Apostles touching the sky, while to the right, the cliffs drop sharply into the Atlantic.

Our first stop is Hout Bay, a quaint fishing village where you will have the option of heading out to sea to explore Seal Island. Or you can stay on dry land to peruse the souvenir shops and craft market at your leisure.

Continuing our journey, we leave civilization behind – traversing Chapman’s Peak (when open) – heading out to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and Cape Point. Here, surrounded by valleys of fynbos and a variety of wildlife in their natural habitat, you can take in some of the most extraordinary views in the Western Cape. For an even better view of the Two Oceans, you can take the Funicular to the lighthouse.

We’ll stop for lunch before we head out to Boulders Beach, one of the most flourishing colonies of African Penguins in South Africa. From here, we’re only a stone’s throw away from Simon’s Town, where we’ll see the naval base.

Our last stop of the day is Kirstenbosch – the crown jewel of South Africa’s nine national botanical gardens – which was founded in 1913 to preserve the country’s unique flora. As the last rays of sunshine streaming in through the peaks of Table Mountain kiss the tips of the leaves and flowers, our unforgettable journey comes to a satisfactory end.

 H/D Cape Town City, and Table Mountain Tour

Scenic drive through Camps Bay, Clifton and Sea Point, past the Cape Town Stadium and through the V&A Waterfront to the city centre.

We continue past the Houses of Parliament, City Hall, the Castle, the Slave Lodge and St Georges Cathedral before visiting the Company’s Garden and Greenmarket Square.

We enter Bo-Kaap, also known as the Malay quarter and stop to take photos of the brightly painted houses while we learn the fascinating history of the area.

We ascend Signal Hill to witness the majestic views.

We continue to the Table Mountain cable station. You have the option of admiring the views from the lower cable station or you can purchase your cable car ticket (± R420) to reach the summit (weather permitting).

A variety of food and refreshment options are available for purchase, both at the lower cable station or on top of the mountain.
After enjoying the spectacular views with your guide from the lower cable way station you may choose to return to your hotel or ascend Table Mountain on your own and find your own way back to your hotel.

We head North towards the scenic winelands for a cellar tour, cheese and wine tasting. Then we stop at the Groot Drakenstein Prison where Nelson Mandela was released in 1990.

We pass over the Helshoogte Mountain Pass enroute to Stellenbosch. Walk through the historical town of Stellenbosch.
