MINE PLANNING AND DESIGN COLLOQUIUM

BACKGROUND

The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) Mine Planning colloquiums have consistently highlighted deficiencies in mine planning skills over the years. The colloquium held in 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2019 all emphasized the need for developing skill-sets with various mine planning tools within the context of multiple mining methods.

Newer tools and skills for the future of mining discussed in the 2019 colloquium suggests an acknowledgment of the evolving nature of the industry. This likely includes advancements in technology, such as automation, artificial intelligence, and data analytics, which are increasingly becoming integral to modern mine planning and operations.

By addressing these deficiencies and adapting to newer tools and skills, the mining industry can better meet the challenges and opportunities presented by evolving technologies, and changing market demands.

Keynote speakers

Mark Munroe currently serves as the Group Chief Technical Officer of Implats. Mark is an experienced mining industry executive, with extensive expertise in leading mining companies at operational, CEO, and director level. His 35-years plus career has spanned multiple countries and continents covering gold, PGM’s, zinc, lead, and copper. He brings a wealth of knowledge to his role, and holds a Mining Engineering degree, and a BCom degree in economics.

Mark's contributions extend beyond the corporate sector. He served on the board of the Mine Health and Safety Council of South Africa for over 6-years. He is a fellow of The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and currently sits on the council. He serves as an ordinary member on the Association of Mine Managers South Africa.

Beyond his professional achievements, he's an avid cyclist, a qualified advanced open water diver, holder of a skipper’s license, and a dedicated Formula 1 enthusiast.

Mark places a strong emphasis on people's development and envisions a mining industry that prioritises people, transforming it into a people centred business, where the focus lies not in what can be extracted from the earth using people, but rather how the resource contributes to the growth and development of people and society. He is a follower of the Care and Growth Leadership philosophy.

Michael Woodhall
Retired

Now retired, English born, Australian bred, South African resident Mining Engineer After graduating from University of Sydney in 1973, worked around Australia for a year and came to South Africa in April 1975 (for two years to take a look) Worked on production and projects for Gold Fields, JCI and AngloGold Ashanti until 1998 when he joined GMSI now known as MineRP, recently acquired by Epiroc Mine Planning was always a passion, keeping pace with the IT tools of the day and spent half his career in the world of 3D graphics, helping miners and IT personnel alike to understand and visualise the realities of mining.

Submit an abstracts to be considered as presentations only at the colloquium.

Prospective presenters are invited to submit titles and abstracts of their presentations in English.

Only in-person presentations will be considered for this colloquium.
