Background

One kilogram of uranium can produce as much energy as 160 tons of coal. As the world transitions to sustainable, low-carbon energy solutions, uranium will play an increasingly critical role by enabling the generation of large amounts of electricity with minimal greenhouse gas emissions. Uranium already forms part of a reliable and low-emission energy mix in many countries, contributing significantly to global decarbonisation efforts.

Uranium and nuclear energy has had its fair share of negative publicity, due to associations with nuclear weapons and the risk of wide-scale harm to humans and nature in the event of an accident. Despite these concerns, the benefits of nuclear energy makes uranium a compelling energy source.

Nuclear energy’s increasing momentum could be seen at COP28, where the first Global Stocktake under the Paris Agreement called for the acceleration of nuclear and other low-emission technologies to help achieve deep decarbonization.”

This conference aims to bring together professionals from across the uranium value chain.
Topics will span the entire spectrum, from geology, mining, processing, application as nuclear fuel, application in the medical field, to post-mining closure – offering a holistic view of the uranium sector.

The conference will take place in the town of Swakopmund, Namibia – the heart of Namibia’s uranium mining industry. Swakopmund is a scenic coastal town, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Namib Desert. It has much to offer the tourist, including great local cuisine, desert excursions, ocean activities and serene beach relaxation.

We invite students, lecturers, engineers, operators, economists, research and development professionals and policy makers to join in the conversations. Participants will gain a holistic view of the uranium industry and its multi-faceted role in modern society and the future of mankind.

Submission process

Abstracts will be subject to peer review, the committee will decide whether to accept or decline the submissions. Relevance to the conference theme, accuracy and uniqueness of ideas, contribution significance, and presentation quality are among the selection factors. Download abstract submission template

Authors will be notified in writing of the acceptance of their abstract. Once accepted the author can submit a full paper for review. Download paper guidelines

  • All presenting authors are required to register and pay for conference attendance prior to publication in the conference proceedings.

Langer Heinrich Uranium Mine

Date: 21 August 2026

Background:

Located approximately 90km east of Swakopmund, the Langer Heinrich Uranium Mine is once again producing uranium oxide after a successful restart project following 5 years of care and maintenance. Based on open cast mining in an ancient paleo channel, the ore is amenable to beneficiation followed by alkaline leaching and ion-exchange. Novel technologies such as nanofiltration for reagent recovery enable Langer Heinrich Uranium to be one of the lowest cost Uranium producers in Namibia. 

PPE Requirements:

Steel capped safety shoes only.

Hard hats and reflector jackets will be provided.

Duration of the visit: Half day – 08:00-12:00
