THE SAMREC/SAMVAL COMPANION VOLUME CONFERENCE
An Industry Standard for Mining Professionals in South Africa

17–18 May 2016 - Conference |Emperors Palace Convention Centre, Johannesburg
19 May 2016 - SAMCODE launch | JSE, Johannesburg

The SAMREC and SAMVAL Codes have been updated and will be released in 2016. In the process of updating these Codes numerous aspects were discussed that required more explanation and guidelines than could be included in the codes. In addition it was noted that the SAMCODES have no recognised guidelines or recognised standards, besides the coal commodity specific SANS 10320 National Standard.

SAMCODES Launch

SAMCODES Launch - 19 May 2016

The SAMREC and SAMVAL Codes have been updated since last been released in 2009.  Since then the global mining or extractive industry has changed requiring a revision of the approach to public reporting. These revisions have been discussed and debated by a number of dedicated industry professionals to ensure they address the needs of the mining industry, investors and all stakeholders. The Codes have been made public and commentary invited. After review by the Financial Services Board (FSB), the JSE and the SAMCODES Standards Committee (SSC), they are ready for release.

We are privileged to be able to release the updated SAMREC and SAMVAL Codes (as well as the SAMOG Code, released in May 2014) at the bell or rather blowing of the Kudu horn on 19th May 2016 at the JSE.  This is a prestigious occasion symbolising the very strong link between the JSE and the SAMCODES and the critical role they play in assisting investors and other stakeholders in their approach to investing in the mining sector, a critical sector in the South African economy.

Objectives

Objectives

The conference provides Competent Persons and Competent Valuators the opportunity to prepare and present details of recognised standards and industry benchmarks in all aspects of the SAMREC and SAMVAL Codes. These contributions will be collated into a Companion Volume to provide a guideline and industry standard for the public reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and the Valuation of Mineral Projects.

The conference will provide a wide range of information pertaining to industry best practice including aspects of a various geological deposit types, commodities, permitting and legal obligations, resource estimation, mining engineering methodologies, metallurgical and process arrangements, engineering/infrastructure design, social and environmental factors etc for SAMREC Code reporting. Other papers will cover the application of the various methods of valuation and where and when they should be applied in accordance with the SAMVAL Code.

This is a valuable opportunity to be involved in the compilation of industry standards and benchmarks to support in all fields related to the SAMREC and SAMVAL Codes.
