"Sulphur and sulphuric acid are no longer by products they must now be considered as strategic resources." - Acuity Commodities, Aug 2026
Sulphuric acid is used in nearly every commercial process around the globe and for this reason is known as the king of chemicals.
Southern Africa's resources are in high demand from uranium, copper and cobalt to rare earths, manganese and lithium. Processing all of these requires sulphuric acid. Sulphuric acid production and consumption will both increase in the region over the next few years.
Abstract submissions are now open!
The 10th Sulphur and Sulphuric Conference Organising Committee is inviting you to submit an abstract for presentation at the 2027 Conference
Why submit an abstract?
Submission process
Abstracts will be subject to peer review; the committee will decide whether to accept or decline the submissions. Relevance to the conference theme, accuracy and uniqueness of ideas, contribution significance, and presentation quality are among the selection factors. Download abstract submission template.
Authors will be notified in writing of the acceptance of their abstract. Once accepted the author can submit a full paper for review. Download paper guidelines.
Please note

WHAT WILL BE DISCUSSED?
The recent closure of the Strait of Hormuz has both highlighted the frailty of international trade routes and the importance of sulphur and sulphuric acid to global commerce.
The southern African region has been one of the markets that has remained very active during this period, paying the highest prices for sulphur imports, largely to keep the buoyant central African copper boom going.
New trade routes have been created to ensure sulphur flows into the region remain consistent.
Will trade flows return to pre war patterns or will risk aversion and supply diversity rule the new order?
Sulphur and sulphuric acid are no longer by products they must now be considered as strategic resources.
THESE ISSUES AND DYNAMICS WILL BE DISCUSSED AT THE CONFERENCE.
Mining companies in Southern Africa have been looking to expand mining activities for some years with growth in copper, uranium, rare earths and battery chemicals set to accelerate over the remains of this decade as new projects get announced and commissioned. Nearly every country in the region will experience growth in sulphuric acid supply and demand as a result.
Orebodies are changing and the emergence of more and more smelters and roasters is changing the sulphuric acid landscape. More tons will need to move around the region.
THESE PROJECTS AND DEVELOPMENTS WILL BE DISCUSSED AT THE CONFERENCE.
Although sulphuric acid has been produced via the contact process for nearly 200 years there are still technology improvements, environmental considerations, catalyst developments and new technologies being introduced all the time.
As cost containment, productivity, metal recoveries and waste management become more relevant chemists and engineers are looking at improving their processes, extraction methods, acid usage and efficiencies. Their technical papers will be presented.
COME AND HEAR THESE GUYS PRESENT THEIR CREATIVE SOLUTIONS AT THE CONFERENCE
People from all over the world are coming to present their views on the complexities, intrigue and sheer magnitude of the sulphuric acid markets and applications. As well as how their ideas, products and innovations can help improve plant operations, improve efficiencies and reduce emissions.
