The International Society of Mine Surveyors (ISM) holds its congress every three years, uniting global mine surveying professionals. South Africa will host the XIX ISM Congress in 2026 in Cape Town, focusing on all aspects of mine surveying.

What is Mine Surveying?
A specialised field within mining science, mine surveying involves measurements, calculations, and mapping throughout the mining lifecycle, including:

  • Planning and controlling mine operations for safety and efficiency.
  • Evaluating mineral reserves and economic viability.
  • Managing mineral rights and mining cartography.
  • Assessing mining impacts on land and geology.
  • Supporting environmental and rehabilitation efforts.

The International Society of Mine Surveyors (ISM) 2026 Congress Organising Committee is inviting you to submit an abstract for presentation at the International Society of Mine Surveyors 2026 Congress.

Submission process

Abstracts will be subject to peer review, the committee will decide whether to accept or decline the submissions. Relevance to the conference theme, accuracy and uniqueness of ideas, contribution significance, and presentation quality are among the selection factors. Download abstract submission template

Authors will be notified in writing of the acceptance of their abstract. Once accepted the author can submit a full paper for review. Download paper guidelines

Please note

  • All accepted abstracts will be published in the conference proceedings and presented during technical sessions.
  • All presenting authors are required to register and pay for conference attendance prior to publication in the conference proceedings.

With a passion for transforming the mining industry, Gary Lane has established a global reputation as an industry leader and innovator over the past three decades.

Gary's distinguished career began with Anglo American, where he held various engineering and project management roles, successfully delivering multiple mega capital projects. After completing his MBA, he co-founded Cyest Corporation 23 years ago, a pioneering consultancy focused on mining optimisation that helped reshape industry approaches to operational excellence.

His entrepreneurial vision led to the launch of a technology startup dedicated to next-generation mining solutions, followed by the establishment of the Vuuma Group of companies eight years ago. Gary is a Fellow of the SAIMM and served as the Chairperson of the SAIMM Technical Programmes for the past 7 years.

As Professional Mine Surveyor Fred is experiencing a new life after a career in academia, government and industry. Fred holds scholarly appointments in South Africa and internationally on the themes of mine modernisation, mineral economics and mine surveying. He is a past President of IMSSA, Past Head of the School of Mining Engineering at WITS and current part-time Director of the Sibanye-Stillwater Centre for Sustainable Mining at UJ. His current work includes technology development for the adoption of AI in mining. Personal Mission: To make a positive contribution to responsible mining – and to become a better Chess player.
