SAIMM Agreement with Mintek

Mintek

SAIMM has finalised an agreement with the Mintek Library, providing members with access to a range of library and information services.

The services available to members, along with any applicable costs, are outlined in the table below.

Please note that all members wishing to make use of the Mintek Library services are required to complete a Client Agreement Form. 

Members who have previously registered may be requested to submit an updated form to ensure that their information remains current and that access to services is maintained.

Once the completed form has been submitted, it will be sent directly to the Mintek Library team, who will contact you regarding your specific information and research requirements.

MINTEK LIBRARY: SAIMM MEMBER RATES

 

SERVICE ACCESS, LIMIT OR FEE
Membership term 1 year, renewable annually
Annual membership fee R2,280 per member, excluding VAT. Payment is required upfront.
Access to Mintek Library collections Included, excluding Client Reports
Document supply from Mintek collections Up to 5 requests per month, including article and chapter downloads
Similarity checks Up to 2 plagiarism or similarity-check requests per month
Interlibrary loan requests Up to 2 requests per month
Onsite access to subscribed databases Unlimited
Collection-related assistance Support from the Library Information Administrator for queries relating to Mintek Library collections
Search and resource guidance Guidance on search strategies, locating resources, and navigating Mintek Library services
Research support and consultation One consultation with an Information Specialist per month
Recent acquisition notifications Included
Book loans Access to book loans from the Mintek Library collection
Library staff support Access to dedicated Mintek Library staff for assistance
Library access hours Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00. Closed on weekends and public holidays.

 

MEMBERSHIP CONDITIONS

 

CONDITION DETAILS
Annual renewal Membership must be renewed annually through payment of the applicable membership fee.
Individual membership Membership applies to one designated individual and is not transferable.
Returning documents All borrowed documents must be returned on or before the due date.
Lost or damaged documents Members are responsible for reimbursing Mintek at the current replacement cost for documents lost or damaged while in their possession.
Copyright compliance The Copyright Act of 1978 restricts photocopying to private use or study.
Membership administration Mintek reserves the right to refuse or cancel membership and to amend the membership conditions and fees.
Membership card Members must present their membership card when visiting the Mintek Library.
Membership number Members must quote their membership number when contacting the Mintek Library.

Terms and Conditions: SAIMM Member Access to Mintek Library Services

This Agreement is entered into between the Mintek Library and the SAIMM member ("the Member") applying for access to Mintek Library services under the partnership agreement between SAIMM and Mintek.

  1. Access to Services

    Through the agreement between SAIMM and Mintek, eligible SAIMM members may access selected Mintek Library services and resources in accordance with the membership benefits, service limits, terms, and conditions outlined in the membership application and service schedule.

  2. Liability and Indemnity

    The Member acknowledges that the use of Mintek Library facilities, resources, databases, and services is undertaken at the Member's own risk. The Member indemnifies Mintek, its employees, contractors, agents, and representatives against any claim, loss, damage, injury, or liability arising from the Member's use of the library's services or facilities, except where such loss, damage, injury, or liability results directly from the negligence or wilful misconduct of Mintek or its representatives.

  3. Membership Fees and Payment

    Membership fees are payable directly to Mintek upon receipt of an invoice. Mintek is a registered VAT vendor, and all fees quoted are exclusive of VAT unless otherwise stated. VAT will be charged at the applicable rate.

  4. Annual Fee Adjustments

    Membership fees and service charges may be reviewed and adjusted annually at Mintek's discretion and may be aligned with inflationary or operational cost increases.

  5. Payment Terms

    Invoices are payable in accordance with the payment terms stated on the invoice. Access to services may be suspended if accounts remain outstanding.

  6. Contact Information

    The Member undertakes to provide accurate and up-to-date contact information and to notify the Mintek Library in writing of any changes to their contact details. Communications sent to the most recent contact information provided by the Member shall be deemed to have been properly delivered.

  7. Overdue Accounts

    Mintek reserves the right to charge interest on overdue accounts at the maximum rate permitted by law. Failure to charge interest in any instance shall not constitute a waiver of this right.

  8. Membership Usage

    Membership is allocated to a single designated individual and is not transferable. Members must comply with all borrowing rules, service limits, and usage guidelines applicable to Mintek Library services.

  9. Lost or Damaged Materials

    Members will be liable for the replacement cost of any borrowed materials that are lost, damaged, or not returned in accordance with the Library's lending policies.

  10. Copyright Compliance

    Members agree to comply with all applicable copyright legislation and licensing restrictions governing the use of information, publications, databases, and documents accessed through the Mintek Library. Materials supplied may only be used for research, study, or other lawful purposes.

  11. Membership Suspension or Cancellation

    Mintek reserves the right to suspend or terminate membership if a Member breaches these terms and conditions, misuses Library resources, fails to settle outstanding accounts, or contravenes applicable laws or regulations.

  12. Credit and Verification Checks

    Where required for account administration purposes, Mintek may perform appropriate verification or credit checks. Submission of the membership application constitutes consent for such checks where legally permissible.

  13. Entire Agreement

    This Agreement, together with the Membership Form and Service Schedule, constitutes the entire agreement between the Member and Mintek Library in respect of membership services and supersedes any previous arrangements relating to the same services.

  14. Electronic Acceptance

    Submission of the membership application electronically constitutes confirmation that the Member has read, understood, and accepted these terms and conditions. Electronic submission shall have the same force and effect as a handwritten or electronic signature.

  15. Governing Jurisdiction

    This Agreement shall be governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa, and any disputes arising from this Agreement shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the appropriate South African courts.

Declaration

I hereby confirm that I have read, understood, and agree to abide by the terms and conditions governing access to Mintek Library services through the SAIMM-Mintek Library partnership.

SAIMM Awards

 

The Brigadier Stokes Memorial Award:

This award is the highest honour awarded by SAIMM, recognising outstanding lifetime contributions to the mining and metallurgical industry.


Honorary Life Fellowship:

Awarded to individuals whom SAIMM desires to honour in consideration of services rendered to the Institute, to science, or to industry.


50 Year Membership:

Presented to members who have attained 50 years of continuous membership of SAIMM.


Fellows elected during the year:

Recognising individuals who have been upgraded to Fellows of SAIMM. The criteria to be considered for upgrading are:

  • Be at least 35 years of age.
  • Have, for a period of at least five years, been practising in a senior technical position in mining or metallurgical undertakings, or in governmental, educational or research organisations concerned with those industries; or
  • Have, for a period of at least five years, been practising as a consultant in the skills of mining and metallurgy, and;
  • Be practising his/her profession at the time of application, satisfy Council that he/she is a fit and proper person to become a Fellow, and Council shall be satisfied that his/her qualifications, training and technical experience justify such professional status, and;
  • Have been a Member of good standing for five years and have promoted the interests of the SAIMM.

Awards for papers published in the Journal:

Recognising authors of outstanding technical papers published in the SAIMM Journal:

  • Gold medal award: Gold medals are awarded for papers that are of a world-class standard and judged to be publications that will become key references in their mining or metallurgical field in the future.
  • Silver medal award: Silver medals are awarded for papers that make a major contribution to the professions of mining and metallurgy and to the prestige of the Institute.

Danie Krige Medal Award:

Consists of a 9ct Gold Medal, with the following criteria considered:

  • Papers on theoretical or applied geostatistics are eligible;
  • The papers must have been published in the Journal of the SAIMM in the preceding calendar year;
  • Nominations for the award may be made by a member of the SAIMM (who is not an author) or submissions may be made by the author(s);
  • Award of a Danie Krige Medal excludes the winning paper from consideration for any other SAIMM publications awards i.e., the SAIMM Gold and Silver medals for Journal papers.

The Top Advertiser Award:

The award is made annually by the SAIMM:

  • It is the Institute’s way of recognising the continued and loyal support of those companies that advertise in the SAIMM Journal.
  • The award is made not only on the strength of the amount of money spent by an advertiser, but also on factors like general co-operation, meeting of deadlines, and the timely settling of accounts.

Student Prestige Prizes:

This consists of a silver medal.

  • Generally the top academic achiever is selected. However, the discretion is given to the University Head of Department to select a person who is not the top academic achiever but who has been active in community involvement or demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities.
  • One SAIMM prize will be awarded per university per bona fide Mining or Metallurgy Bachelors qualification – this could be extended to include Chemical Engineering if there is a case requested by a university based on the number of graduates that find employment in the Metallurgical sector
